Dorothy Marie Klinger was born on March 1, 1928, the youngest of 3 children born to the union of William and Marie (Younie) Klinger. She was raised on the farm north of Fulton, SD with her 2 brothers, Robert and Roy. When her parents divorced, Dorothy and her mother moved to Alexandria where she attended high school and eventually met the love of her life, Robert ("Bob"/"Nipper") Campbell. Robert and Dorothy were united in marriage on July 14, 1951 and they had one child, daughter Darla Marie. They enjoyed 61 yrs of marriage until Robert's death in 2013.
Dorothy's first job was as a waitress at Mum's Café on Main Street in Alexandria where her mother was the cook. After high school, she worked as the assistant to Judge Frank Vincent. It was he who recommended her to be the Office Manager of the new Hanson County ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service) office that was being started in Alexandria – this was an entity set up to manage the Federal Farm Program for the US Department of Agriculture. She would enjoy 35+ years of service to the Federal government in this capacity, retiring in 1982 – she had fond memories of her work with the many farmers of Hanson County and her 4 colleagues who worked with her for most of that time. For several years following her retirement, Dorothy spent much of her days walking about 9 miles around the town of Alexandria until she and Bob moved to Mitchell. Eventually, they moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to her daughter and family. She was proud to be the surviving spouse of a WWII Veteran/Purple Heart recipient and just as proud of the military service of her 2 grandsons who are veterans of the Global War on Terrorism. She persevered through the challenges that years of hearing loss and a diagnosis of Essential Tremor gave her – she greeted everyone with a smile, excited to visit with whoever was there.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Darla and son-in-law Richard (Dick) Klinger of Custer, SD, formerly of Hartford; their 2 sons: Matthew (Lakisha) Klinger of Sioux Falls; Jeremy (Betsy) Klinger of Colorado Springs, CO; her great-grandchildren: Liryk and Harmoni Klinger; several nieces and nephews; and Darla's BFF Sharon Kertscher Ziegler who has always been like a 2nd daughter to Bob and Dorothy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her brothers Roy and Robert and their spouses, and all of Bob's siblings and spouses.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for the Avera Race Against Cancer and the Essential Tremor Foundation.
