Obituary

Dorothea Evelyn Wingfield, 91, of Mitchell, died January 27, 2006 at the home of her son under the care of hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 31, at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday with Eastern Star Rites at 7 PM. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. She was born on August 18, 1914 at Ethan, SD to Hiram and Elizabeth (Bell) Cole. She attended grade school in Ethan and after her fathers death, she moved to Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1932. After graduation, she attended Samuels School of Cosmetology, in Sioux City. Dorothea was united in marriage with Frank J. Wingfield on October 25, 1936 at Mitchell. The couple made their home in Parkston where she operated a beauty shop and from 1951-1954, she managed a small grocery store. They moved to Mitchell in 1956 when her husband became a professor at DWU. In the mid 1960s, she was employed as ward secretary at the Methodist Hospital. She was employed in the mid 1970s as a dental assistant with her son, Dr. John Wingfield and retired in the early 1980s. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, sewing, traveling, gardening and visiting with people. She enjoyed maintaining the dental equipment. She especially enjoyed her dogs and cats. Dorothea is survived by her son, John Wingfield and wife, Mary, of Mitchell; four grandchildren, Ruth Liebau, Mitchell; Judith Kinney and husband, Clay, Seattle, WA; Deb Wingfield, St. Paul, MN; and Meg Wingfield, Seattle, WA; two great grandchildren, Stephanie Fore and Chris Liebau; a niece, Carol Wilson and husband, Dick, Dallas, TX; and nephews, Bob Cole and wife, Dianne,Wilsonville,OR; Kenneth Cole and wife, Margaret, Mesa, AZ; 2 great nephews, Bob Cole and his wife, Teri, Sioux Falls, SD, Chuck Johnson and his wife, Pam, Redwood Falls, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1989, her parents, three sisters, Jennie Johnson, Lillian Jones, and Hannah Franklin, and two brothers, Bud Cole and Bill Cole. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Area Hospice.
