Obituary
Donald Smith, age 85 of Emery, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday April 14
at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 6:30 PM. Graveside services will be at a future date in St. Martins Catholic Cemetery in Emery.
Don was born on October 2, 1923 in Sioux City, IA. He attended school in Emery and Ames, Iowa where he graduated. He joined the navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was an engineer for Illinois Bell Telephone in Chicago, Illinois, where he met and married Mary Alice McKenney on January 10, 1956. He farmed near Emery until his retirement.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 166 since 1955 and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose since 1969.
He is survived by two daughters; Mary Jager and husband, Don of Fulton, SD; Patricia Sudtelgte and husband, John of Payson, AZ; one son, Forest and wife, Tricia of Humboldt, SD; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, three sisters Doris Ellen Nurre, Sioux City Iowa, Patricia Dieterich, Vero Beach, Florida, and Joann Smith-Hofer, Ellijay, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Alice, and a daughter, Nancy Smith Crelly.
