Obituary

Donald D. Hanson, age 71, of Alexandria, SD died November 9, 2009 at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday November 21, 2009 at St. Marys Episcopal Church in Mitchell with burial a 2:00 PM burial at Greenhill Cemetery in Alexandria, SD. Visitation with the family will follow at The 420 Main Street Building in Alexandria.

Don Hanson, son of Willard and Myrtle (Foster) Hanson, was born June 7, 1938 in Alexandria, SD. He grew up in Alexandria and attended school there, graduating from Alexandria High School in 1957. On May 20, 1957, Don entered the US Air Force and served in Italy as an MP in the K-9 Corp.

Don was united in marriage with Marie Matthews on September 2, 1961 at St. Marys Episcopal Church in Mitchell, SD. He was honorably discharged on May 19, 1963. Don was employed as a police officer with the Mitchell Police Department. He was also employed as a custodian at Mabee Clinic. Don then drove truck for Glendenning for a short time. In 1968 he began his career with Hormels in Mitchell and was transferred to Fremont, NE in the summer of 1979. After 30 years of service with Hormels Don retired in 1998, and the couple made their home at Lake Hanson. He then worked briefly with Hanson Rural Water and later with Commercial Bank.

He enjoyed boating, water skiing, Hanson School sporting events and coaching grade school basketball. Don was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Mitchell, Fremont and Alexandria. He chaired and served on many church boards, Masonic Lodge #37, Mitchell Elks, served as a former local president of Hormels Union, and was a member of Alexandria Greenhill Cemetery Board. Although Don had many interests his true love was his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marie Hanson, Alexandria, SD; two daughters, Barb (Ron) Gaeth, Fremont, NE, Donna (Brad) Jamison, Mitchell, SD; four grandchildren, Troy Gaeth, Tessa Gaeth, Kari Jamison, Chase Jamison; a sister, Mildred (Ray) Fischer, Parkston, SD; two brothers, Dewayne (Carol) Hanson, Mitchell, SD, Terry (Gloria) Hanson, Mitchell, SD; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Dons name.
