Donald LaVerne Bolen age 89, of Mitchell died Friday, January 20, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Burial will be in Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Donald Laverne Bolen was born January 22, 1922 in rural Alpena, SD to Edward and Minnie (Kruzen) Bolen. He grew up in rural Alpena and attended country school. Don graduated from Alpena High School in 1940. After his schooling he helped on the family farm. In 1942 he entered the US Army Air Corp and served in the signal corp, stationed in Robins Field, GA and the east coast of Florida. Don was united in marriage with Irene Fouberg on July 3, 1943 at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, SD. After they were married, Irene stayed with her parents for nine months before joining Don in Robins Field, GA. After he was honorably discharged the couple returned to farm near Forestburg, SD. Don was employed by the Soil Conservation Service for 30 years. For a short time he sold cars and worked at a finance company. He retired in March of 1984. He enjoyed outdoor activities, yard work, traveling and working on cars. In his younger years Don also enjoyed pheasant hunting. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Grateful for having shared his life are his three children, Cathy Adams and her husband, Reverend Bruce, Lead, SD, Darrell Bolen, Mitchell, SD, Dr. Dennis Bolen and his wife, Lorna, Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Amber Martinell and her husband, Darwin, Sioux Falls, SD, Justin Bolen and his wife, Kari, Sioux Falls, SD, Miranda Fox and her husband, Brian, Sioux Falls, SD, Calli Adams, Bismarck, ND, Amy Adams, Lead, SD; three great grandchildren, Kameryn Martinell, Dawson Martinell and Melody Bolen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Bolen; his parents; three sisters; and one brother.
