Donald William Montgomery "Bill", went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2026. A private family memorial service will be held at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Bill was born in Mitchell, South Dakota August 28, 1935 to Curtis F. and Elva (Bates) Montgomery. He graduated from Mitchell High School. While living in Mitchell he served in the National Guard 196th at the rank of sergeant.
Bill met his love in school and married Janese Dee Sprinkel "Jean" on August 1, 1953. After Bill and Jean started their family with their first son, David Alan, he and the family moved to California where he began his career with GTE Telecommunications. Bill moved up in the company to become a service/facilities supervisor.While in California Bill and Jean had a second son, Ricky Dee.
After living in California for several years, Bill moved his family to Plano, Texas. He became a member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club of Plano. His career with GTE/Verizon lasted 33 years. After retiring there he pursued a supervisory position at Northern Telecom. He retired again after 4 1/2 years.
Bill's favorite things in life other than his family was-to travel, play golf and hunt. Upon retiring he and Jean sold their home in Plano and became full time travelers for many years. In 2007 he returned to Mitchell as his permanent home base.Bill was a member of the Congregational Church UCC of Mitchell.
Bill was a man of integrity, a loving husband, a loving and proud father and grandfather. His love, guiding hand and unfailing support was invaluable to his family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jean Montgomery; son, Ricky Montgomery and wife Sue; brother, Jim Montgomery and wife Gloria; half-sister, Sonna Crary and husband Dave; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; cousins; and nieces and nephews.
Bill is preceded in death by his father, Curtis F. Montgomery; mother, Elva Montgomery; stepmother, Helen (Sherwood) Montgomery; son, David Alan Montgomery; sister, Beverly Cupp and her husband Jim; and half-sister, Pat Montgomery.
