Dennis Eugene Hauge age 88, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, December 13, 2024 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Friday, December 13, 2024 at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Dennis Eugene Hauge was born March 3, 1936, in Howard, SD, to Joseph and Leona (Schultz) Hauge.
Dennis attended Concordia High School and College in St. Paul, MN, and Yankton College in Yankton, SD, from where he graduated.
Dennis was united in marriage with Corinne Luebbert on June 14, 1959, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton, SD. To their union two daughters were born, Susan and Laura. After their marriage, Dennis and Corinne made their home in Yankton, with Dennis working at Montgomery Ward. In 1963 they moved to Mitchell, where Dennis began his career with the State of South Dakota Job Service. He took great pride in his work of helping the unemployed find jobs, which encompassed everything from permanent positions with employers to seasonal summer work for high school students. He also was a frequent guest on the Mitchell TV station's noon news, discussing current area job openings. Dennis retired from the Job Service after 30 years of service.
Dennis was a member of First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Throughout his life he was involved with many church activities, including serving as a church president and as a church council member. At First Lutheran he volunteered with the Alter Guild, delivered church bulletins, and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Dennis enjoyed many outdoor activities which included hunting, boating, and fishing. As a gun collector, he was a long time member of the Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Association.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Higgins and her husband Major General (Retired) Patrick Higgins, Fairfax Station, VA, and Laura Ahartz and her husband Shannon Ahartz, Henderson, NV; three granddaughters and their spouses, Sarah Becker and Dr. Matthew Becker, Arlington, VA, Emily Davidson and Trevor Davidson, Arlington, VA, Dr. Jessica Higgins and Cole Gessner, Pittsburgh, PA; and two great-granddaughters, Caroline Becker and Marian Becker.
He was preceded in death by his wife Corinne Hauge, sisters Jodene Erickson and Janet Heath, and his parents Joseph and Leona Hauge.
