Obituary

Delores "Dee" Osborne, age 81, of Mitchell, SD died Monday May 28, 2012 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 4, 2012 at New Home Lutheran Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 6:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Dee was born November 10, 1930 at Mitchell, South Dakota to Ed and Gladys (Lowrie) Backlund. She attended French country school Prosper Township and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1948. She attended SDSU and graduated in 1952. On August 8, 1953, she married A.R. "Buck" Osborne at Mitchell, SD. Dee was an active member of New Home Lutheran Church and devoted many hours to boards and committees. Her interests included, bible school, world hunger, Lutheran World Relief, quilting, and Abbott House mentoring. She served at the conference and Synod level of the ELCA in South Dakota. She was an accomplished rosemaler, and active in the Mitchell community attending many sporting, music, and theatre events. Dee took great care in nurturing friendships through her many activities. She volunteered her time freely to the Food Pantry, and by painting memory boxes for hospitals. Dee was a 55 year member and past president of the BK Chapter of the P.E.O. Dee loved travel and spent many hours researching family genealogy. She was intensely proud of growing up on a family farm. Her conservative and practical nature learned during the great depression served as an example to her family. Dee was survived by brother Charles Backlund and wife Myrtle, Pierre; sister Lois Heintz and husband Dean, Newton, KS; sons Kurt and wife Christy, and granddaughter Erinn of Brookings; Kent and wife Cindy, and grandsons Tyler and Alex, and granddaughter Kelsey of Vermillion; and daughter Kay and husband Paul Kernahan, Havelock, BC. Dee was preceded in death by her husband Buck in 2003 and her parents. Memorials for New Home Lutheran or ELCA World Hunger may be directed to New Home Lutheran Church, 1023 S. Minn.
