Dean Doorn, age 83 of Mitchell, passed away April 18, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, April 24, 2014 at First Reformed Church in Mitchell, SD with Pastor Dean Ulmer, officiating. Burial will be at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Dean was born to Ed and Minnie (Beukelman) Doorn on April 11, 1931 near Corsica SD. He spent his childhood years in Corsica and Harrison SD. He helped is father with the family produce business. He graduated from Corsica High School in 1949. He was united in marriage with Loris Ketel on June 1, 1951 at the First Reformed church in Harrison SD. In January of 1952 he was drafted into the US Army. He took his basic training in Fort Knox, KY and was stationed at Fort Hood, TX until he was honorably discharged in 1954. Soon after his discharge he and his family moved to Nampa, ID where he hauled canned milk for six years. He and his family returned to SD where they lived in Emery and then moved to Mitchell where they raise their family. During that time Dean hauled milk and also had a feed business with an over the road trucking business. In 1984 they moved their business to Oregon. In 1986, Dean and his family moved to Rapid City where he was employed as a truck driver and later transferred to Salt Lake City, UT. In 1992 Dean and Loris moved back to SD due to Dean's health problems. They lived in the Tripp and Corsica area. He was a school bus driver in Corsica for 9 years. Dean and his wife moved to Wesley Acres Senior Living in Mitchell in 2008. He was a member of the American Legion and the First Reformed Church in Mitchell. The things Dean enjoyed throughout his life were driving truck, traveling to new places, visiting with friends, baseball especially watching the Minnesota Twins, golf and most of all his family. Dean is survived by his wife of 63 years, Loris (Ketel) Doorn, Mitchell, SD; six children, Pat (Leon) Reiner, Tripp, SD, Doug (Barb) Doorn, Vermillion, SD, Robyn (Blaine) Duxbury, Westfield, IN, Dave (Lisa) Doorn, Steamboat Springs, CO, Brad (Kristen) Doorn, York PA, and Bryan (Jenna) Doorn, Mitchell, SD; 16 grandchildren, Marc Reiner, James Reiner, Case Doorn, Seth Doorn, Scott Duxbury, Andrew Doorn, Grant Doorn, Robert Doorn, Ben Doorn, Evan Doorn, Jennifer Fossness, Erin Haverhals, Abby Doorn, Katie Duxbury, Hannah Doorn and Madison Daley; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers Gary (Lonni) Doorn, Meridian, ID, and Edd (Dawn) Doorn, Bend, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Minnie (Beukelman) Doorn.
