David Kauwalu, age 75, of Mitchell, SD died Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel.
David "PaPa" Kauwalu son to David and Florence (Gilman) Kauwalu was born on April 4, 1941 in Haleiwa Hawaii. He grew up in Haleiwa and attended school grade school at Haleiwa Elementary and Graduated from Waialua High and Intermediate School in Waialua, Hawaii. On April 12, 1966 Papa was drafted in The United States Army and spent almost 2 years in Germany. He was honorably discharged on April 2, 1968 and Returned to Haleiwa.
On April 26, 1969 Papa was united in Marriage to June "Mama" Almeida at Haleiwa Evangelical Mission in Haleiwa Hawaii. Papa started his career with the City and County of Honolulu in 1974 in Haleiwa and in 2006 retired after 30 Years of Service.
In 2007 Papa and Mama moved to Mitchell South Dakota. Most of his time in Mitchell he spent taking care of his family, golfing, working in the yard and watching the Hurricanes play softball. He was one of the Hurricanes biggest fans and truly enjoyed traveling with the team to many different cities and towns for games and tournaments. Papa was also a big fan of Dakota Wesleyan Basketball teams and you could often find him in the front row of the padded seats at their home games.
On July 9, 2016 Papa gained his angel wings. He is survived by his Wife June Kauwalu, 4 Children, Dayna (Patrick) Sanchez, Davelynn Kauwalu, Denise (Christopher) KauwaluSchultz, David (Elizabeth) Kauwalu Jr. 14 grandchildren, Jaylynn Kauwalu, Jarren (Shalani) Kauwalu, John Hurst-Kauwalu, Andrea (Brandon) Kerr, Jesse Hurst-Kauwalu, Donovan Kauwalu, Shawn Kauwalu, Jayme-Lee Hurst-Kauwalu, Patrick Sanchez Jr., Jordon Heffernan Kauwalu, Meghan Sanchez, Jenesis Heffernon Kauwalu, Dallas Kauwalu, Karly Kauwalu and 3 Great Grandchildren Kekela Kauwalu, Kayla Ramirez Hurst Kauwalu, Kala'iola Kauwalu Kaahu
He was preceded in death by his Father David, Mother Florence, 2 Sisters Dansett Setser, and Yolanda Borges.
