David Alan Hughes, age 48, of Mitchell died while working in rural Minnehaha County on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, January 23, 2012 at First United Methodist Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel. David Alan Hughes, son of Laurence Hughes and Shirley (Weingart) Norfleet, was born December 22, 1963 in Riverside, CA. As a child he grew up in California and later the family made their home in Byers, KS. Dave graduated from Skyline High School in Pratt, KS in 1982. After his schooling he worked the oil fields in Oklahoma with his brother and then made his way to South Dakota. While in South Dakota he married Teresa Olson. In the summer of 1986, Dave met Char and the couple later moved to California in 1989. They were united in marriage on August 29, 1992 in Fullerton, CA. While living in California, Dave was employed by the City of Seal Beach. In 1994 they returned to Mitchell, SD. He worked at Dakota Pork and South Dakota Concrete; he was currently employed at Asplundh Tree Expert Company. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being with family and friends. Dave also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching his son play hockey and going to his daughter's gymnastics meets. He especially loved the Green Bay Packers. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Char Hughes, Mitchell, SD; four children, David (Melanie) Hughes, Harrisburg, SD, Dylan Hughes, Mitchell, SD, Dustin Hughes, Mitchell, SD, Alyssa Hughes, Mitchell, SD; a grandson, Caiden Hughes, Harrisburg, SD; his mother, Shirley Norfleet, Laughlin, NV; a brother, Todd Hughes, Mitchell, SD; three sisters, Debbie (Mike) Fitzsimmons, Seal Beach, CA, Linda (Greg) Welburn, Fullerton, CA, Becky (John) Barker, Paramount, CA; his in-laws, Ron and Lynda LaFortune, Mitchell, SD; two sisters-in-law, Pam (Bill) Wittstruck, Mitchell, SD, Melanie (Derek) Danilko, Middletown, MD; a brother-in-law, Mike (JoAnna) LaFortune, Mitchell, SD; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Laurence Hughes. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Dave's name.
