Obituary

Darold John Mattheis, age 77, of Parkston, SD passed onto his heavenly home due to COVID-19 19 Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Private family services will be held at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston, SD with burial at the Parkston Protestant Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, November 13, 2020 at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston, SD. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.

Darold John Mattheis was born on November 12, 1942 to Ervin CW and Clara (Hanselman) Mattheis at the Parkston Hospital. He was baptized on December 20,1942 by Pastor Burrach and confirmed on June 2, 1957 by Pastor Borhardt at Salem Lutheran Church. He attended town school in Parkston until the eighth grade and then started his love of farming with his father.

On February 16, 1964, he was united in marriage with Betty Storm at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Dimock, SD. Together they made their home on the Mattheis family farms. Darold was a farmer at heart who enjoyed working the ground and raising cattle and pigs. He always looked forward to his time combining. His greatest joy was when he was working alongside his family. Darold cherished watching his family, children and grandchildren grow as they worked in the fields and helping with chores. Darold received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1976 from the Parkston Area Jaycees.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and ushered.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Betty of 56 years; his children, Denise (Joel) Weber, Lorie Ann (Keith) Wermers, Michael (Amy) Mattheis, Jon (Devyn) Mattheis; grandchildren, Jeremy (Brandi), Justin (Katie ), Tyler and special friend Sam, Amber (Lee), Aaron, Jadee and special friend Koby, Riley, Ragen, Preston and Kaeden;  great grandchildren, Emma, Braxton, Kinley, Bristyl, Noah and Coy; two sisters, Mary Ann (Dave) Neugebauer and Phyllis Mulso; two brothers-in-law, Larry (Ginny) Storm and Gary Storm; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parent, Ervin and Clara Mattheis; his in-laws, Lawrence and Adeline Storm; a brother Leo in infancy; his brother-in-law, Dennis Mulso and a nephew Jay Neugebauer.

Due to COVID-19, the family will require masks and social distancing at the visitation and private family service. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook under Salem Lutheran Church, Parkston, SD. The funeral service will be recorded and may also be viewed at willfuneralchapel.com.
