Darlene Wenz Tastad, age 71, of Mitchell, died Sunday, July 24, 2005 at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at the Restlawn Cemetery at Huron. She was born June 5, 1934, to Wyman and Donna (Layburger) Phinney in Huron. She graduated from Huron High School in 1952. In November, 1953, she married Walter Wenz at the Huron Congregational Church. They farmed in rural Huron until 1963 before moving to Letcher. After the death of her husband and oldest son in 1968, she worked as a sales clerk for several years at J C Penneys and Buches. On Oct. 7, 1977, she married Harold Tastad of Mitchell and resided in Letcher before retiring and moving to Huron in 2000. In 2004, she moved to Mitchell and resided at Avera Brady Health and Rehab until her death. She is survived by her husband, Harold, Woonsocket; sons: David Wenz and wife, Kris, of Letcher, Dean Wenz and wife, Larra, Kiowa, CO, Todd Wenz and wife, Melody, Britton, SD and daughter, Teri and husband, Mark Dyar, Sioux Falls; three step children: Bonnie Kupchik and husband, Mike, Big Canoe, GA, Kathy Buresch and husband, Allan, Castle Rock, CO; and Vickie Mayer and husband, Jim, Mitchell; eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren She is also survived by two sisters, Charlotte VanLaecken, Mitchell and Betty Holforty , Huron. She was preceded in death by her husband and son, and brothers, Lyle and Keith Phinney and two infant brothers.
