Darlene Haines, age 84, of White Lake died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 8 at the United Methodist Church in White Lake with burial at the White Lake Public Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 PM Friday at the church with the family present from 5 to 7 and a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Darlene (Glissendorf) Haines was born November 12, 1926 in Wilbur Township, Brule County, SD to Ralph and Edna (Falk) Glissendorf. She was the fifth of nine children. She graduated from White Lake High School in 1944 and attended Dakota Wesleyan in the fall of 1944.
In 1946, she began work in the Dakota Wesleyan business office. On April 23, 1950, she married Orville Haines. She returned to the working world in 1975 as office manager at Kimball Livestock for seven years. Then she was employed with the United States Crop Reporting Service until she was elected Aurora County Auditor in 1983. She was elected for four terms and retired in 1995. In 2006, Orville passed away and Darlene became a resident of the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home until the time of her death. Darlene was a member of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Fortnightly Club and United Methodist Church. She served as treasurer of the United Methodist Church for many years and on the board of the Mitchell Area Safe House.
She was involved in the livestock and auction business with Wayne and Orville for many years. She loved family gatherings, attending grandchildrens activities, reading traveling, gardening and collecting elephants.
Darlene is survived by five children, Deb (Allan) Olson, Mitchell; Rhonda (Roger) Hanson, Huron; Wayne (Kristie) Haines, White Lake; Bonnie Haines, Phoenix, AZ and Bruce (Marlene) Haines, Mitchell; son-in-law Craig Nowotny of Rapid City; eighteen grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, ten great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, four sisters-in-law Caryl Schone, Inge Glissendorf and Janet Glissendorf, White Lake and Martha Glissendorf, Rochester, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Orville, her parents, eight brothers and sisters, and her daughter Bette (Haines) Nowotny.
