Obituary

Daris DD Uhre of Mitchell, SD died at his home on September 2, 2006. He was 56 years old. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 7th, at Trinity Lutheran Church located in rural Letcher. Visitation will be at the Will Funeral Chapel from 6-8 pm Wednesday, September 6th, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Daris Dean Uhre was born February 23, 1950 at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell to Maurine (Van Walleghen) and Owen Bernard Uhre. He was baptized on March 26, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed there on June 6, 1965. He attended country grade school at the Mayhew School in Sanborn County. He and his brother Curt often drove a pony cart to grade school, which was about 2 miles each way. Daris attended Letcher High School where he was active in the FFA, band, and glee clubs. He was class president, a musical soloist and was selected to sing at the All State Chorus. Daris graduated from Mitchell High School where he participated in the Mitchell High Spring Musical and glee clubs, and was a soloist as well. After high school, Daris attended college at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. During this time, he was active in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and was involved in several theater productions. While growing up, Daris helped his dad on the family farm. He was active in the Butler Booster 4-H Club and showed his calves at the State Fair. His artistic talents were evident in his paintings and drawings. He also liked to hunt and fish, and practiced with his bow and arrows. Daris is survived by his mother, Maurine, of Mitchell; a brother Curtis and wife Lea of Potomac, Maryland; a sister Jolene and husband Andrew Conlin of Phoenix, Arizona; and two nieces, Katharine Uhre and Emily Uhre. His father, Bernard, his paternal grandparents, Albert and Annabelle Uhre, and his maternal grandparents, Maurice and Tamma Van Walleghen, preceded him in death. Memorials can be sent to Pathways (a division of Dakota Counseling Institute) at 900 W. Havens Avenue, Mitchell, SD 57301.
