Obituary

Daniel Roy Todd, age 55, a resident of Letcher, South Dakota, died Sunday, August 7 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 13 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in the St. Scholastica Cemetery in Letcher. The family will receive friends at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 12, with a service of prayer from 7 to 8 p.m. Daniel Roy Todd was the son of Letcher native Thomas Raymond Todd and Loretta Kappenman Todd of Dolton, South Dakota. Born January 30, 1950 in Alexandria, Virginia, Daniel attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Bishop Ireton High School where he lettered in basketball and track. In 1966 he moved to Columbia, South Carolina with his family and graduated from Cardinal Newman High School and the University of South Carolina. As a planner and researcher, Mr. Todd served in the South Carolina Governors Office and with Carter Goble Associates of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1978 he co-founded Blackwater Associates, a private research and consulting firm in Columbia. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, he worked with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, serving as Director of Research and Evaluation and as Executive Director of Mission New Hope, a collaborative community project focused on reducing substance abuse. In 1998 Daniel Roy moved to Letcher, South Dakota to care for his father and in August, 2001, became the Executive Director of the Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation, focusing his efforts on strategic planning for the Foundations future success. In 2004, he helped others organize an initial five-year strategic planning process for the Letcher and Artesian communities, where his family has lived for many years. He is survived by his sister Cindy Todd Roof of Columbia, South Carolina, brothers Mike Todd of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Pat Todd of Durham, North Carolina, a brother-in law and two sisters-in-law, eight nieces and nephews and twelve grandnieces and nephews, as well as relatives and friends across the country. The family requests that those wishing to remember Daniel Roy make contributions to the Daniel Roy Todd Memorial Fund at Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, South Dakota. A memorial service, celebrating the completion of a joyful, compassionate and generous life, will be held in Columbia, South Carolina later this fall.
