He is survived by wife of 23 years, Jody, Sioux Falls, SD; a two sisters, Cheryl (Ron) Jirsa, Mitchell, SD, Colleen Davis, Overland, KS; a brother, Darald (Joann) McElroy, Rapid City, SD. Daniel L. McElroy, son of William C. and Vivian L. McElroy, was born March 7, 1960 in Marshalltown, IA. Dan attended Mitchell public schools. He served in the US Army from 1978 through June of 1979, at which time he was honorably discharged after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He married Jody Bates, May 13, 1989 in Mitchell, SD. Dan and Jody enjoyed their home together south of Sioux Falls, which they shared with their two Dachshunds, Porsche and Ember and two German Shorthair Pointers Brooklyn and Jamaica, which Dan referred to as his girls. Dan loved being with family. He dearly loved his nieces and nephews and was often the footstool of their pranks. While he protested, he loved their attention. While suffering from many health issues, he always welcomed family and his many friends with his contagious smile. Dan suffered from cardiac arrest while attending a McElroy reunion in Rapid City, where "all" his family and extended family were in attendance. Dan was where he loved to be. Dan was known as a giving person and even in death, his giving continues as his donation of organs and tissues will touch the lives of as many as 50 people. His liver was gifted to a 58 year old female, one kidney to a 60 year old male, one kidney to a 61 year old male, gift of the pancreas is pending, and eyes, even though Dan was blind in one eye, will be gifted to the SD Lions Eye Bank. His heart will be used for research. For full obituary go to www.willfuneralchapel.com. You can also read Dan's story at caringbridge.org.site name: danielmcelroy.
