Clarence O. Hainy age 91, of Mitchell died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM followed by the Masonic service. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery with military rites. Clarence O. Hainy, son of Charles and Viola (Ruml) Hainy, was born May 22, 1922 in Jerauld County, SD. He attended country school in Jerauld County and later graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1942. Clarence entered the US Army on December 26, 1942 and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 2, 1946 and returned to Wessington Springs. Clarence was united in marriage with Betty Hodgson on June 30, 1946 in Wessington Springs, SD. The couple made their home in Wessington Springs for a short time before making their home in Mitchell, SD in the early 1950's. While in Mitchell, Clarence was employed at NorthWestern Public Service. He retired in the early 1970's after 20 years of service with the company. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. Clarence was a life member of the Masonic Lodge #31, the El Riad Shrine, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and served as Exulted Ruler and served as president of the Optimist Club and as president of the rock club. He also served as secretary/treasurer of the Universal Bowling League for 25 years. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 67 years, Betty Hainy, Mitchell, SD; a brother, Vernon (Bud) Hainy, Mitchell, SD; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church or Shriners Hospital for Children.
