Charlie Arthur Krietlow, age 76, of Mitchell, SD died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Firesteel Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, January 27, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Charles Arthur Krietlow, son of Arthur and Wilma (Hugg) Krietlow was born November 1, 1937 in Mitchell, SD. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1957 and South Dakota State University in 1961 where he was involved in the ROTC program. Charlie was employed with the Alaska Department of Fisheries for three years and was also a member of the South Dakota National Guard. In 1961, Charlie began his surveyor career working for Schumucker & Shaffer Consulting Engineers (now known as Schumucker, Paul, Nohr & Associates). On September 1, 1977, he was employed by the City of Mitchell's Engineer's Office as a draftsman, head surveyor and engineering technician. Charlie was involved in all construction and infrastructure projects as an inspector on all projects which were bid for providing sewer, water, storm sewer, paved streets, street lighting, sidewalks, the Lake Mitchell Spillway Project and numerous other projects. He retired after 23 years of service with the City of Mitchell. Charlie has donated many hours of his life to the Sportman's Club and Firesteel Pistol and Rifle Club. He has won awards for shooting rifle, pistol and black powder shooting. Charlie enjoyed spending his free time fishing, hunting and enjoying the great outdoors. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell where he served on the Financial and Stewardship Boards. His faith helped him to achieve 30+ years of sobriety. In 2011, Charlie was inducted into the South Dakota Municipal League. William J. Janklow, while Governor of the State of South Dakota proclaimed March 18, 2000 as Charlie Krietlow Day. Grateful for having shared his life are his fiancé, Caren Flynn, Winner, SD; his brothers and sisters, Vale (Barb) Krietlow, Mitchell, SD, Kaye (Bern) Schoonhen, Rochelle Park, NJ, William Krietlow, Mitchell, SD, Richard (Kaye) Krietlow, Mitchell, SD, Cheryl Uttecht, Mitchell, SD, Kristi (Duane) Butrum, Mitchell, SD and Kim Krietlow, Mitchell, SD; a sister-in-law, Bev Krietlow; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lannie; a brother-in-law, Wilmer; his step father, Val Sanborn; a sister-in-law, Judy Krietlow; a nephew, Jimmy Krietlow; and a great nephew, Kenny Benkovic.
