Carolyn Barington, 81, of Mitchell passed away Monday, March 4, 2024 in her home. A funeral service will be a 5:00 PM Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Will Funeral Chapel.

Carolyn Jane Barington was born May 3, 1942, in Sacramento, CA to Solomon and Olive (Schmidt) Grosz. Carolyn eventually moved and grew up in Yankton, SD and attended Yankton High School. While there, she met the love of her life and best friend, Melvin Barington.

During her time growing up in Yankton, SD, she worked at a family restaurant owned by her parents. After marrying Melvin in 1960, she followed Melvin and his military career to Augusta, GA, Fort Riley, KS, and then back here where they called home in Mitchell, SD. During her years in Mitchell, she worked at Mitchell Area Headstart and then ended her career at K-Mart after working there for about 25 years.

At that time, Melvin also retired, and they enjoyed their home on Lake Mitchell. During these years Carolyn loved to go boating on the lake, go fishing with Melvin, and spending time with her family. She also loved cheering on her Dallas Cowboys, planting and watering her flowers, and dipping her cookies in her coffee while enjoying the lake view.

She was grateful to share her life with her children; daughter Pamela Barington (Jack Winegardner) of West Park, FL, daughter Cynthia Barington (Shawn Dunlap) of Red Lion, PA, son Michael Barington (Laurie) of Mitchell, SD, and son Marty Barington (MaryEllen) of Mitchell, SD; Grandchildren Tyler Dunlap, Kassi Barington (Wiley Barington-Steele), and Kylie Barington; Great Grandchildren Isabella Barington-Steele and Dawsyn Barington-Steele; and sister in law Diana Spence.

She is preceded in death by her parents Solomon and Olive Grosz, husband Melvin Barington, brother Ray Grosz, sister Doris Svendsen, and grandson Riley Flack-Barington.
