Obituary

Calvin Schultz, age 78 of Mitchell, died Sunday July 11, 2004 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Calvin Emil Schultz was born in Douglas County on June 12, 1926 to Emil and Emma (Moege) Schultz. At six months of age, he moved with his family to a Davison County farm southwest of Mitchell. In 1928, polio struck Cal, but he helped with the farm, despite his disability. He became interested in art at a young age, and with his great creative talents he would become a gifted artist and teacher. Cal graduated from Ethan High School in 1946, and attended art school in Omaha, Nebraska for two years. He taught at Father Flanagans Boys Town in Omaha and at St. Pauls Indian Mission at Marty. He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell in 1957 and founded the art department at the State Training School in Plankinton. He married Ida Pfister on August 11, 1961, at Mitchell. In 1965, he began teaching art in the Mitchell Public Schools and continued to do so until 1983, when post-polio syndrome affected his mobility. He was a respected and well-liked teacher. For twenty-five years, Calvin designed the murals for the Corn Palace. He also designed logos, contributed his art to fundraisers, exhibited his work at the Oscar Howe Art Center and much more. Cal loved visiting with people and he had a marvelous sense of humor. The buoyancy of his spirit, despite obstacles, was an inspiration. Cal and Ida had special places in their hearts for their beloved dog, Andre, and for Rocky, the cat. He is survived by a son, Stephen Nicolaisen and wife Charlotte, of Mitchell, a daughter, Paula Guhin and husband David of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida in April, 2001, a son, his parents, and all seven of his siblings; Elton, Lehman, Bill, Urban (Slim), Lloyd, Delbert and Elda. Memorial may be directed to the St. Paul Indian Mission, Marty, SD 57361
