Bessie Carey, 80, former resident of Spencer and Mitchell, died May 31, 2005 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne Nebraska. Funeral services will be held at the Will Funeral Chapel on Friday at 10:00 am. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the South Spencer Cemetery. Bessie was born March 30, 1925 at Inwood, Iowa to Cornelius Case and Maggie (Brouwer) VanDer Lugt. She married Leonard Pete Carey on October 27, 1945 at Spencer. She was a homemaker and in later years worked for Beverly HealthCare Salem and the Spencer School System. She was a member of the Homebuilders Extension Club and the Christian Church Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and always welcomed friends, neighbors and relatives into her home with a cup of coffee and often a meal. She is survived by four children: Roger Carey, Mitchell, Duane Carey & wife, Anita, Orlando, Florida; Karen Bodlak and husband Allan, Wakefield, Nebraska and David Carey, Sioux Falls; two brothers, Adolph Duffy VanDer Lugt, Mitchell, and Peter VanDer Lugt, Everett, WA; and four grandchildren: Adam Carey, Matthew Carey, Michal Bodlak, and Jonathan Bodlak. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 2003, parents, two brothers, Herbert and Jasper and two sisters, Gertrude and Jennie.
