Bernie Schmucker age 94, of Mitchell died Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Firesteel Health Care Community. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a Masonic rites service beginning at 7 PM. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery with military rites.
Bernie Earl Schmucker was born March 11, 1923 in Rapid City to Earl T. Schmucker and Zelma (Frank) Schmucker. Following military service in the Army with the 104 th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II he graduated from the School of Mines with a degree in civil engineering. After working for Scott Engineering in Watertown until 1961, he moved to Mitchell to start SPN Engineering.
Bernie married Lilas (Hayenga) in 1948 to which union daughter Jean and son Morris were born. He married Maxine (Easton) French in 1972.
Bernie served as Davison County Commissioner, on the City Planning and Zoning Commission, Mitchell Lake Committee; was active in the Resurgam Masonic Lodge and Corn Palace Shrine Club, and as state president of the Snowmobile Association. His hobbies included sailing, model railroads, radio-controlled airplanes, trout fishing, motorcycling, and snowmobiling.
He is survived by his wife Maxine, daughter Jean, Watertown, S.D.; son Morris his wife Lori and grandson Adam of Folsom, CA, step-sons Dan French and Doug French, sisters-in-law Norma Cunningham and Jackie Easton, brothers-in-law Glenn Cunningham and Ron Easton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Junelda of Prescott Arizona. Memorials may be to the Corn Palace Shrine Club for its work with Shriner's Hospitals.
