Obituary

Bernard Bernie Horstman, age 90, of Mitchell, SD died Saturday March 8, 2008 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Bernie Horstman, son of Henry and Lena (Boddicker) Horstman, was born September 3, 1917 in Norway, IA. At the age of three, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of Parkston, SD. He attended country school, catholic school in Parkston and graduated from Parkston High School in 1936. Bernie then received an accounting degree from Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD. After his schooling, he made his home in Mitchell, SD. In September of 1938 he began his banking career at Mitchell National Bank. Bernie was united in marriage with Lorraine Bowar on July 16, 1946 in Dimock, SD. The couple continued to make their home in Mitchell. While at Mitchell National Bank he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin. Bernie retired as the Senior Vice President of Mitchell National Bank on December 31, 1981 after 43 years of service. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and served on the parish council at the church. Bernie also served on the Red Cross Board, the Salvation Army Board, Calvary Cemetery Board and the School Board at Notre Dame. He enjoyed fishing and camping in their motor home. Bernie and Lorraine wintered in California and Arizona for ten years. Grateful for having shared his life are his six children, James (Glenda) Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Sister Janet Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Ron (Cindy) Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Jo Anne (Rob) Van Laecken, Parkston, SD, Robert Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Judy Miiller, Mitchell, SD; 10 grandchildren, Chris Horstman, Mitchell, SD, Justin Horstman, Blaine, MN, Eric Van Laecken, Tea, SD, Jason Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Tyler Miiller, Mitchell, SD, Jamie Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Jenny Horstman, Sioux Falls, SD, Heidi Van Laecken, Sioux Falls, SD, Tara Sandoval, Mitchell, SD, Trisha Miiller, Sioux Falls, SD; 2 great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Austin Waring; a brother, Franklin (Monica) Horstman, Dimock, SD; and a sister, Erma Neuberger, Indianapolis, IN; especially his adopted daughter, Sister Sheila Schnell; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Horstman on October 15, 2003; a son-in-law, Steve Miiller; a granddaughter, Jodi Flogstad; a grandson by marriage, Shawn Sandoval; two brothers, Clarence and Henry Horstman; and a sister, Edna. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Holy Family Building Fund or Avera Brady Health and Rehab.
