Obituary

Barry Lee Vlasman, 52, Brookings, died at his home on March 24th, 2007. Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, on Saturday, March 31, with Rev. Hank Kor officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Fulton, SD. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Barry was born on February 23, 1955, to Vernon and Ilene Vlasman of Fulton, SD. He attended grade school at Fulton High School and graduated from Hanson High School in 1973. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University and the University of South Dakota receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in education. He taught middle school and high school social studies at Cresbard, SD and Kimball, SD. Choosing to pursue a career in Law, he made application to the Law School of the University of SD and earned his juris doctorate. He passed the SD Bar and began his law career serving as Deputy States Attorney of Meade County from 1989 to 1996. In 1996 he established a private law office specializing primarily in family and criminal law. He ran his office in Sturgis for three years before deciding to move his business back to eastern South Dakota to be closer to family. He initially established law offices in Sioux Falls for approximately two years before moving his practice to Brookings where he served until the time of his death. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading extensively and writing fiction. He was pursuing writing as a hobby and possibly on a professional basis and had completed one unpublished novel law mystery. He also was involved as a youth teacher/advisor at his local church in Brookings. He is survived by his father, Vernon, Fulton; two brothers, Lynn and wife, Sylvia, of Tripp, Kevin and wife, Brenda, of Epiphany, a niece, Crystal and a nephew, Joshua. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ilene.
