Audra Mae Johnson, age 87 of Mitchell, formerly of Escondido, CA, died Wednesday August 17, 2011 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Monday August 22, 2011 at Graceland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Audra Mae Long, daughter of Calvin and Pearl (Roberts) Long, was born in Stickney, SD. She grew up on a farm between Stickney and Mt. Vernon. Audra attended country school and later graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. She then attended Northern State College. Audra was united in marriage with John M. Johnson on September 4, 1942 in Aberdeen, SD. While John was serving his country during World War II, Audra lived in Redonda Beach, CA for three years and was employed in an aircraft factory. After John's discharge, the couple returned to Aberdeen, SD where Audra was employed as the secretary at Central High School in Aberdeen. She retired in 1977 after twenty of service at Central High School. In their retirement the couple moved to Escondido, CA to be closer to their son, David. In 2006, Audra returned to South Dakota and made her home in Mitchell at Firesteel Healthcare Center. She enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, playing bridge and watching sports on TV, especially golf. She will always be remembered at a person cared about other people's needs and was always willing to help others. She was a member of Professional Business Women's Association, the PTA in Aberdeen, the Methodist Church in Aberdeen and Escondido and the Escondido Country Club. Grateful for having shared her life are her son, David (Kayda) Johnson, Carlsbad, CA; a sister, Cleo Studer, Mitchell, SD She was preceded in death by her husband, John on July 22, 2002; her parents; and three brothers.
