Arvid W. Brown age 96, died Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Firesteel Health Care Community. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the Will Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tim Asbill officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Friday, September 1, 2017 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell with military rites.
Arvid was born October, 9, 1920 in Shell Lake, WI to William and Alice May (Pooley) Brown. After a number of moves he arrived in Mitchell, where he graduated from Mitchell High School in 1938. He married Versal Caylor on July 25, 1939.
On May 19, 1944 he entered the army and served in WWII in Italy. Arvid's life was focused on his family until public service called. He served as 4-H leader for many years, followed by a short term on the Mitchell City Council and later for many years on the city planning commission.
Arvid was a life member of the American Legion Post 22 in Mitchell.
Arvid was well known as being one of the best automotive "countermen" in the area. A skill he developed over the years at Automotive Supply and then 25 years at General Motor Equipment Co. Finally retiring from Dick's Body Shop. After retirement he could be found at local fairs in the region selling hand crafted wooden toys.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Versal of Mitchell; four children Vern (Rita) Brown, Sioux Falls, SD, Jarrold, North Platte, NE, William (Kathy) Brown, Marion, SD and Martha Jane Brown, Aurora, CO; a sister Martha (Erwin) Neuharth, Goodrich, ND; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister Zeona.
