Obituary

Arthur J. Schroeder, age 82 of Mitchell, SD died Sunday October 10, 2010 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service and rosary at 7:30 PM. Burial will be in Servicemans Memorial Cemetery.

Arthur Jacob Schroeder, son of Matt and Elizabeth (Koch) Schroeder was born in Hanson County on November 16, 1927. He grew up on the family farm. He lost his mother at an early age and his dad remarried Elsie Hildebrand. He attended Wayne #1 country school for 8 years and stayed home and helped his dad farm. For many years Art ran a corn shelling business.

Art married Florence Zeier on August 22, 1950 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. He was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He returned home and farmed until July of 1994 when he retired and moved to Mitchell.

Art was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD and later a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. He was on the Wayne Township board, and a director of the Farmers Union Grain Elevator. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Club, Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the Elks. Hobbies include bowling, hunting, fishing (if they were biting), playing cards and doing word search, having coffee with his friends, spending time with his family and if it needed fixing he could fix it.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Florence of Mitchell; children Terry (Ramona) Schroeder of Alexandria, Carolyn (Martin) Mentele of Crooks and Janice (Larry) Eining of Clear Lake; 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; brothers Will Schroeder of Sioux Falls, John (Ila) Schroeder of Alexandria, Donald (Gayla) Schroeder of Aurora, CO; sisters Edna Weber of Mitchell, Agatha (Ralph) Weber of Montrose, Agnes (Bill) Geppert and Mary Erpenbach of Alexandria and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Preceded in death are his parents and step mother; father and mother-in-law Albert and Rose Zeier; great grandson Tyler Eining; sister Francis Flowerree; brothers-in-law Harold Erpenbach and WJ (Hub) Weber and sister-in-law Mary Schroeder.

Art and Florence celebrated their 60th Anniversary on August 22, 2010.
