Obituary

Arthur Berry Chase, 90, of Casselberry, Florida, formerly of Mt. Vernon, died March 10, 2007 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with Masonic Rites at 7 PM. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery with full military rites. Mr. Chase, son of Howard and Lillian Renning Chase, was born on March 6, 1917 in Kasson, Minnesota. He graduated from Frankfort High School in South Dakota in 1934 and from Huron College in 1938. He began his teaching career that same year in Mount Vernon High School in South Dakota. In addition to his teaching duties at Mt. Vernon High he was the Athletic Director who coached basketball, football, and track. He led the Mighty Mustangs to the State Class B basketball championship game twice during his tenure there. He married Shirley Mae Zeal on February 8, 1941 in Nashua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. To this union three daughters were born. He served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned to his teaching and coaching careers first at Frankfort High School from 1945-1947 and then back to Mt. Vernon High School from 1947-1951. He resigned in 1951 to accept a position as an insurance adjuster for General Adjustment bureau (GAB). His career with GAB took him to Sioux City, Mason City, and Ankeny, Iowa and then to Casselberry, Florida in 1973. His wife, Shirley, preceded him in death in 1984. He married Elizabeth R. (Betty Ruth) Asmussen in 1985. Following Betty Ruths death in 1990, he married Jane Smith McConnell in 1991. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church serving in various leadership positions in the church. He was a member of the Master Masons and American Legion. His favorite pass time activities were traveling, playing golf and watching basketball, especially the Orlando Magic. He is survived by his wife, his three daughters, Linda Schuster of Pickrell, NE; Marcia Gatewood of Burke, VA; and Carole Dinkins of Davenport, FL; a sister, Joan Arthur of Lebanon, MO; a half-brother, Howard Chase of Lincoln, NE; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. His passing is a great loss to his family and friends.
