Obituary

Arlene F. Hartman, age 87, of Mitchell, SD died Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church with burial at Greenhill Cemetery in Alexandria, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM Arlene Fern Friedrichs, daughter of Walter and Clara (Pietrusky) Friedrichs, was born August 20, 1925 on a farm south of Alexandria, SD. She was baptized on September 6, 1925 at the St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, South of Alexandria, SD by Pastor E. DeWald. Arlene was confirmed on April 2, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Mitchell, SD by Rev. E.K. Hartenberger. She was united in marriage with Oscar Hartman on November 26, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Deer Creek, MN by Pastor Wm. Friedrichs. The couple lived on a farm near Deer Creek until Oscar was drafted into World War II. During the time Oscar was gone she lived with her parents and moved back to SD with them. Arlene lived in South Dakota all her life but the four years spent in Minnesota. Oscar returned from the war wounded with a medical discharge. After Oscar's return from the Army, the couple lived on their farm near Fulton for fifty years until they moved to Mitchell. Arlene was a Diet Clerk at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell from 1973 to 1987. She took care of her husband after he developed health problems for many years. Later she became active doing volunteer work through the James Valley Community Center. She especially enjoyed the volunteer reading time to first graders at John Paul II. Arlene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD, and a former member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Alexandria, SD and Trinity Lutheran Church, Deer Creek, MN. She taught Sunday School and Bible School at St. Martin's Lutheran Church and was a LWML Member and served as Treasurer for LWML at Zion Lutheran Church. Arlene was a member of Busy Bee Extension Club in Hanson County and active in 4-H as a youth and was a girls Hanson County Club Leader. She was a lifetime member of the DAV in Mitchell, SD Grateful for having shared her life are her nine children, Jean Louise (Darald) Schlenker, Mitchell, SD, Alvin (Sonya) Hartman, Brandon, SD, Dennis (Diane) Hartman, Mitchell, SD, Shirley (Randy) Burmeister, Mt. Vernon, SD, Marlys (Peter) Weins, Mitchell, SD, Marilyn Hart, Mitchell, SD, Joyce (Tim) Graff, Sioux Falls, SD, Bruce (Judy) Hartman, Worthing, SD, Timothy Hartman, Mitchell, SD; 30 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Leota (Ervin) Fuerst, Ruth Boehmer, Eldora Doughtery, and Nettie (Edgar) Goerhring; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Hartman on June 23, 1998; her father in October 1980; her mother in November 2003; her brother, Eugene in November 1983; a baby brother, Virgil in February 1933; a daughter-in-law, Jeninel Hartman in March 2011; and a son-in-law, John Hart in May 2010.
