Anthony "Tony" Zens, age 93 of Mitchell, SD died Friday, May 6, 2022 at his home under hospice care. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, May 13, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at military rites at Servicemen's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2022 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.
Anthony "Tony" Zens, son of Matt and Martha (Paradeis) Zens, was born December 22, 1928 in Canova, SD. He was baptized at Holy Three Kings Church and attended grade school at St. Mary's Catholic School in Epiphany, SD. He attended Burbank High School. Tony served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1954 with the rank of Airman First Class and was stationed at Texas, Illinois, Kansas, Guam, Japan and New York. After his honorable discharge, Tony farmed for 35 years on the family farm near Epiphany. After retiring to Mitchell, SD he worked part-time at Campbell Supply for 22 years.
On June 19, 1954 Tony was united in marriage with Leona Thoele at St. Francis Catholic Church in Teutopolis, IL. After Leona's death he married Vera Hill on September 27, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.
Tony was a member of Holy Family Church, former member of Holy Three Kings Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, served as chairman of the Epiphany Centennial Committee, Hanson County Draft Board, was chaplain and adjutant commander and on the firing squad for the Canova American Legion, and Canova Lumber Yard secretary. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and senior bowling.
Tony is survived by his daughter Sue (Terry) Olson, Madison, SD; grandson Lee (Sarah) Olson and great grandchildren Imogen, Christian, Elliot and Hadley, Red Wing, MN; grandson Jess Olson, Madison, SD; sister, Mary Goodhope, Santa Barbara, CA; step-children Linda Bass, Bernice Larson, Vern, Bob and Rick Hill.
Tony was preceded in death by his wife, Leona; wife Vera; brothers and sisters-in-law Norbert (Freeda and Vera), Ambrose (Catherine) and Clement (Elsie) Zens; brother-in-law, Clayton Goodhope.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church.
