Ann Ware, age 100, of Mitchell , SD died Tuesday December 2, 2008 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital . Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery . Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.

Anna L. Wittenhagen, daughter of Herman and Albertina Wittenhagen, was born on June 24, 1908 on a homestead 10 miles west of Ethan , SD. She was one of twelve children in the family. Ann was educated in school thru the eighth grade. She was a avid reader and continued to learn her whole life.

Ann worked outside the home including being an elevator operator in the Western Building , working at a café, Mitchell Laundry and at Mitchell Produce candling eggs.

She was united in marriage with Howard Ware on March 16, 1931 in Olivet , SD. They lived in Mitchell most of their lives with a brief venture to California and Ohio . Howard served in the Army and returned to a career of transportation work. Howard died on March 4, 1987 at the age of 80.

Ann helped her family whenever requested. For many years she served as a volunteer at Firesteel Healthcare Center with bingo. Providing childcare for a nieces' children captured much of her time and energy.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church . Having a beautiful yard or placing flowers on the patio was always special to Ann. She continued her love of animals having had dogs, cats and birds. She was a dedicated homemaker and always taken an interest in small children.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews and their children; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ware; her parents; and 11 siblings.
