Adolph ?Duffy? Vander Lugt, age 74, of Mitchell, died on June 26, 2005 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center following a valiant battle with Parkinson?s disease and Alzheimers. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 30, at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at the American Legion Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. He was born on August 27, 1930, at Inwood, Iowa to Cornelius ?Case? and Maggie (Brouwer) Van Der Lugt. Duffy lived with his parents and siblings on several farms in the rural Mitchell area and neighboring small towns and attended country school. He was a veteran of the Korean War era and served in the US Army as Specialist 3rd Class from 1954-1956. He was stationed in Germany, serving with the 596th Transportation Company. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, he returned to the states and married his long time sweetheart, Darlene Brooks, on August 18, 1956 in Mitchell. Following a move to Seattle, Washington, Duffy worked at Boeing Aircraft and as a carpenter. Ill health brought them back to Mitchell in 1963, where Duffy was provided with exceptional medical care at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. Following an extensive recovery period, he was able to return to work at the Bottle Shop in the Village Bowl before securing a job at the US Post Office, a position he held for 25 years. He was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, doing such things as playing cards, hunting, camping, fishing, reading, and traveling. He loved spending time with his six grandchildren and family pets. Duffy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, United Postal Workers Union, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Darlene; one son, Greg Vander Lugt and wife, Lisa of Cascade, Iowa and their two children, Rachael and Logan; one daughter Debra and husband, Steve Oster of Eureka, South Dakota and their four children, Rebecca, Diana, Robyn, and Nickolas; and one brother, Pete Van Der Lugt and wife, Beverly of Everett, Washington; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Duffy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Herbert and Jasper, three sisters: Gertrude, Bessie, and Jennie as well as one brother in infancy.
