Maiden
May 27, 1927 – January 6, 2020
Adelaide (Addie) Erma Otterpohl-Hrdina-Maiden was born on May 27, 1927.
She went to be with her Lord and savior on Monday, January 6, 2020, at Firesteel Health Care Center.
Visitation will be Friday, January 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 with a prayer service at 6:30.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 11, at 10:00 a.m. at New Home Lutheran Church, with burial at the Graceland Servicemen's Cemetery immediately following the service, and lunch after at the Church.
Addie was born to Henry and Agnes (Larson) Otterpohl on their farm. Addie started elementary school at the Victory School in Pershing Township in Buffalo County. She attended all eight grades there (from September 1933 until May 1941). She was raised one mile off the Crow Creek Indian Reservation and went to the "Old" Fort Thompson for all school activities. She graduated from Pukwana High School.
Addie took a home correspondence course from the Chicago School of Nursing and graduated in May of 1944. Her first job was the "old" Chamberlain Sanitarium Hospital from June 1944 until February 1945. She then worked at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls in June 1946.
Addie met Fred Hrdina in January of 1948, and they were married June 12, 1948 at the Plankinton Lutheran Church. To this union one daughter, Ramona was born.
In January of 1950, under the new waiver law, Addie became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Saint Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD before going to Community Bailey Hospital in Chamberlain, SD. Addie later worked at the Saint Joseph Indian School as a typist in the office before returning to the Community Bailey Hospital.
Addie married Lawrence Maiden on May 30, 1954 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain.
Addie's final job was in the 1970's when she worked for Barney's Auto Salvage in Sioux Falls. Addie was furnished with a one-ton truck to use for hauling cars "dead or alive"; it was the most fun job she had ever had.
She and Lawrence lived in rural Mt. Vernon for many years, before moving to Mitchell in the late 80's.
She was a member of New Home Lutheran Church. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and was an avid NRA supporter. Addie very much enjoyed visiting, texting, playing Bingo, playing cards and putting puzzles together.
Addie is survived by her daughter, Ramona Wendelboe, grandchildren, Tammy (Josh) Renken and Brian Wendelboe, three great-grandsons, Gage and Reed Renken and Brody Nelson, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Addie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence, brother, Ernest Otterpohl, sister Lois Sweet, step-son, Larry Maiden, son-in-law, Kenny Wendelboe, and grandson, David Kenneth Wendelboe.
