Mathilda Margaret Tegels Walz, age 89, of Mitchell died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday July 17, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service followed by a rosary service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Mathilda M. (Bornhorst, Tegels) Walz was born on the third day of March in 1921 to the daughter of Frank and Mary (Plendl) Bornhorst where she lived on the family farm West of Salem, South Dakota. Mathilda attended St. Mary’s Boarding School from 1st through 8th grade.

On November 15, 1938, Mathilda was united in marriage with Clarence Tegels at St. Mary’s Church in Salem, SD. They moved to Spencer, SD; Emery, SD; Iowa and Mitchell, SD where they made their home for over 40 years with their 7 children. Clarence passed away November 25, 1965.

Mathilda worked for Truax Hatchery, Woolworths, Pennys and Pam Oil.

Mathilda was later united in marriage with Wendlen Walz on January 28, 1984 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, SD.

She moved to Firesteel Nursing Home in 1998 after breaking her leg.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family Altar Society, DAV, UCT, VFW Auxilary, and the American Legion. Mathilda enjoyed and loved her family, crocheting, baking (date nut roll cookies) canning, and quilting. She was known for her Easter Dinners. She also loved Easter at her home, Easter egg hunts, teaching her grand-children to quilt, quilting, and fishing in the Black Hills.

Mathilda was grateful for having shared her life are her children, Jeanette Carlin, Mitchell, SD, Elaine and (John) Carlin, Grettenger, IA, Dwayne Tegels, Chattanooga, TN, Carol and (Otto) Oehlerking, Rapid City, SD, Colleen and (Bruce) DeJong, Mitchell, SD, Pamela and (Marc) Hammero, Austin, MN; 33 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 19 great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Clarence Tegels and Wendlen Walz; a son, Darrell Tegels; a grandson, Douglas; two great grandsons, Ryan Tindall and Robert Tegels; her parents; four sisters, Helen Glass, Veronica Schoeberl, Cordelia Havard, Rosella Bornhorst; three brothers, Frank Bornhorst Jr., Roman Bornhorst, and Edwin Bornhorst; a son-in-law, Charles Carlin; and a grand daughter-in-law, Jada Oehlerking.
